Hail Damage FAQs

Q: How does hail damage a roof?
A: Asphalt shingles have three components: a mat made from fiberglass or cardboard, an asphalt coating and a covering of granules. It is the asphalt that sheds the water. Shingles are designed so that the granules block the UV of the sun and protect the asphalt. If the asphalt is exposed to the UV, it quickly dries out and deteriorates, reducing the shingles’ life expectancy dramatically. More than anything else, hail causes and accelerates granule loss. This leads to the deterioration of the asphalt. Once the asphalt is compromised the shingles have come to the end of their useful life.

Q: How I do I know if I have hail damage to my roof? My roof looks fine! Could it still be damaged? Can I tell from the ground?
A: If you have had hail in your area, a close inspection of the shingles should be made from the roof by an experienced roof assessor to determine if the shingles have been damaged. Hail damage on a roof is often missed from a ground level inspection.

Q: Why would my insurance company replace my roof?
A: The purpose of homeowner's insurance is to protect homeowners against losses in their property's value due to damage that is beyond their control. If you have hail damage, you have experienced a financial loss. Depending on the terms of your insurance policy, your insurance company may compensate you for your loss.

Q: Do I need to get my roof replaced right away?
A: Hail damage normally does not result in immediate leaks and roof failure. However, insurance companies allow hail claims to be filed only within a set period of time from when the damage occurred. If you miss this deadline then you will be left paying the entire bill for your roof replacement on your own.

Q: Should I call my insurance company before I call a roofing company?
A: It is often better not to call your insurance company until an experienced roof assessor has inspected your roof. We can make sure the roof appears to be eligible for a claim before you contact your insurance company. If there is damage, we will also be happy to meet with your insurance adjustor and go over the specifications of your claim.

Q: What if Stronghold’s quote is higher than the insurance company estimate?
A: This rarely happens, but if it does then we will install your roof per the insurance company specifications and pricing.

Q: When an insurance adjustor inspects my roof, how do I know if he understands roofs enough to recognize hail damage?
A: The best results for the homeowner are obtained when an experienced roof assessor inspects the roof first.

Q: My insurance company denied my claim, so am I out of luck?
A: Not necessarily. You're entitled to appeal the denial. In some cases this leads to the adjustor eventually finding that you have legitimate hail damage and approving the claim. There are many different reasons that this can happen. Sometimes adjustors get to a roof before the full extent of the hail damage to the asphalt component of the shingles is apparent. Sometimes the adjustors are inexperienced. Sometimes they were tired after looking at so many roofs that day. Sometimes they just make mistakes. The best results for the homeowner are normally obtained when an experienced roof assessor assesses the hail damage on the roof and calls to the adjustor's attention any hail damage that he sees.

Q: Will my insurance company cancel my policy if I file an insurance claim?
A: No, insurance companies may not punish a homeowner for Acts of God.If your roof has hail damage and it is covered under your policy, you should open a claim.

Q: Will my insurance company raise my premiums if I file an insurance claim?
A: Insurance companies are not allowed to raise an individual homeowner’s premiums just because that homeowner opened a claim. However, some insurance companies offer a “claims free discount” to discourage homeowners from opening a claim. This discount is negligible compared to the value of a roof replacement. However, by assessing the roof first to determine if a claim may be justified or not, we help homeowners make an informed decision about opening a claim.

Q: If I do not file my claim, will my insurance company raise my rates?
A: After a hail storm, insurance companies may raise everyone's rates. If this happens and you don’t open a claim then you are paying for everyone else's damage except yours.
